American vs. European-style monuments: sourcing granite memorials from India

American vs. European-style monuments

A headstone for the USA and a headstone for Europe are not the same product. In the USA, buyers usually want a tablet on a base. In Europe, many buyers want a set that covers the full grave. The shape changes, and so does the number of pieces. Buyers in each market also check the finish in their own way.

This matters for every importer. A design that sells well in one market may not sell in the other. Cemetery rules also change from place to place. Some fix the size and design.

India is a strong place to get both styles. Indian factories have exported finished granite memorials for decades. Absolute Black, a common memorial stone, is quarried in south India.

Ratani makes monuments for both markets. In this blog, we explain what American and European buyers expect. We will also share what to send us when you place an order.

American style monuments and cemetery rules

Most American style granite monuments are upright. An upright has two parts. The die is the standing stone with the name and dates. The base sits under it. The serpentine top is the most common shape. It has a gentle curve along the top edge. Oval and flat tops are also used.

Upright granite headstones in the USA are usually 24 to 42 inches tall and 12 to 36 inches wide. The front and back are polished. In the trade this is called P2. The sides are usually rock pitched. Slant monuments are also very popular. They have an angled face and need no base. They can be set directly on the foundation.

Many American cemeteries have strict size and design rules. The importer shares these sizes with the supplier. The stone must match them exactly. A wrong size can be refused.

The USA is the largest market for black granite monuments in this style. Engraving stands out well on black stone. The polish lasts, and the stone handles harsh weather. Black granite also stays uniform across large batches. India’s Absolute Black comes mainly from Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

European style monuments and finishing

European style granite monuments often cover the whole grave. A standard set has a headstone and granite kerb sets around the edge. The kerbs mark the full outline of the grave. The middle can be closed with a ledger, which is a flat cover slab. A ledger also gives space for long inscriptions.

Each country has its own style. Polish buyers usually order the full grave bed with monument, base, kerbs and ledger. German buyers often want stone polished on all sides. Book-shaped headstones are common in the UK. French cemeteries mostly use kerbs with a covering slab.

European designs are usually simple. Proportions matter. Small faults are easy to see. Buyers check the edges closely and look for even polish. Uneven polish on one kerb spoils the look.

Colour matching and granite choices

An American upright has only two pieces. A European set has many. They sit side by side on one grave. If one piece comes from a different block, the shade may not match. The difference is easy to spot after installation. So the full set should come from the same granite batch. We plan this before cutting starts.

Black is not the only colour used. Imperial Red, also called New Imperial Red or Ruby Red suits uprights, shaped headstones and custom profiles with matching bases. Vizag Blue is a blue-grey granite with darker mineral patterns. It is supplied to Europe, Russia, CIS countries and the USA. Both colours give importers an option beyond black.

Ratani’s supply and how to order

Ratani is a trusted granite monuments manufacturer in India. We make headstones, tombstones and monuments in many sizes and finishes. Along with American designs, we make Irish, Russian, Spanish, Japanese and Turkish styles. As a granite headstones exporter India based, we supply importers in the USA, France, Italy and Russia.

Engraving is done at our factory. Options include personal messages and detailed designs. So custom granite memorials arrive ready to install. Distributors buying granite tombstones wholesale can order repeat batches from the same drawing. This helps them keep the same stock for their customers.

Looking for a granite monument supplier from India? Send us a drawing or photo with the cemetery rules. For American orders, share the die size, base size, top shape and polished sides. For European orders, list every piece in the set. Tell us if the grave needs a ledger.

We will check your design and send the price and production time.
